Leslie Hamrick

Artist’s Statement

I recently joined a group of fellow artists to create a well of sorts. Our intent was to address the need to both draw from and refill the creative well. What has emerged is an overflow of inspiration, direction, and opportunity. Setting off for a residency in Listowel, County Kerry I zeroed in on the growth and expansion I had begun to experience. Particularly drawn to the textures and lines of the stone walls in Ireland, my story evolved. Moving stones, building vessels, and introducing the regenerative frog goddess Heqet into my figures has brought a new power that reflects my own transformation. I am embracing a literal rebirth in this next phase of life, continuing to seek and explore.

Biography

Leslie Hamrick is a figurative, mixed media artist who embraces exaggerated forms, strong lines, and texture. Her gestural line work belies her contemplative approach guiding the viewer through her methodical process. Earning a BFA from the University of Kansas and a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Leslie practiced art therapy with a variety of populations before settling with her family in Augusta, GA. Coming back to her own art in recent years, Leslie uses pieces from her past to inform her current work, often incorporating old artwork and narratives into her collages. She finds the physical act of making art to be therapeutic in itself and enjoys the process as much as the end product. Aiming to expand her experience, Leslie is an active member of the arts community where she serves as a board member of the Greater Augusta Arts Council and is an instructor at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. Her work can be found in local galleries and she has been juried into Artfields in Lake City, SC. In her free time, Leslie loves to travel with her husband Mark, always seeking inspiration in her surroundings.
